Blogging | In-Class Feedback

Thoughts on Blogging or using Web 2.0 Tools

  • You can use this to present to administration to expand more.
  • You can definitely use any Web 2.0 tool to adapt to any age or level.
  • Student can set the bar for themselves on how they want things to be viewed and present. Having students blog will give them more of a passion and eye to proofread and edit their work. They know someone is going to see it and they want it to "look good" and "be good".
  • You can share these with parents (home resources) to continue to learning process at home.

Other Web 2.0 Tools to use in the classroom:

  1. Web 2.0 for Teachers - Pre-Kpages
  2. Using Social Media in Early Childhood Education
  3. Using Little Bird Tales to make Multimedia Stories
  4. Web 2.0 Tools - Preservice Education

Thing 16.5 | Final Evaluation

Evaluation

Please give me your feedback on your experience by reflecting on your learning journey by blogging a few thoughts. Here are some questions to prompt you:

Please give specific answers for each question.

1. What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
One of my favorite discoveries throughout this process was the learning and finding of more Web 2.0 Tools. There are just tons out there!

2. How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
This program has given me a chance to embrace and challenge my skills as learner.

3. Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
I did expect me to enjoy blogging. I do love it. I didn't expect classmates to enjoy my blog and give me such great feedback. Thanks guys!

4. What could I do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
I would have actually spaced out my time doing the assignment if I had known all that it required. I am upset life outside of school got in the way. But I managed and here I am doing my final evaluation.

I hope this is not the end of our learning journey together but the start of something amazing …Think about you next steps...you can continue this journey by...
I have created 4 other blogs for each of my courses with reflections from books, videos, and other current updates found from web 2.0 Tools...

Check em out:

Science: http://educ5350sciencehappens.blogspot.com/
Theology: http://insidetheclassroom1.blogspot.com/

I really see blogging as an online management tool of ideas, reflection, projects, and interaction.
In my school email, I have added my Blog URL to my email signature line. It is a great way to get the word out and to share my profession, ideas, and passion for education with others.

Exciting kudos for lifelong learning!

Thing 16 | PhotoPeach

PhotoPeach

I just learned how to create slide shows and even quizzes using a great web 2.0 tool called PhotoPeach. I created a slideshow about different Country Flags using the iChat Icons in my Macbook Pro's Photobooth.

Step 1: Upload Quickly
Step 2: Add Music

Would you like to see it? Click link below:

My Country Tis of Thee.... on PhotoPeach - Fresh slideshows to go! via

I could use this slideshow teaching 3rd graders during Culture week about the different countries. How do we identify one flag from another and Can you identify the country?

Thing 15.5 | Twitter

My Professional Technology Twitter

My twitter screen name is TeckLearnEd send me a tweet about what you are doing in your classroom.
 (Special Tweets to Dr. Wilson)

(My Teck Twitter Account)

Here are some links for you:

LinkedIn

Having a Twitter and LinkedIn account has been great. Both are a great network tools for any profession. Having a community of collaborators is a great professional move.

Thing 15 | Things Like Skype

It was nice to use a different element, format, and scenery to introduce the new lesson concept to the students.

Skype

How might Skype be used in the  classroom? Blog about your experiences with Skype and ideas for classroom use. Was it easy or hard to make it happen?

I have used Skype in my classroom to talk with my students from another part of the school. The students arrived to the classroom and the teacher's aide was inside the classroom for crowd control and to set up the system.
I was located in the garden as we talked about our "Space" for Public Speaking.

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2009/04/14/timestopics/skype-395.jpgI think Skype could also be used for group or partner projects, school to school collaboration or classroom to classroom collaboration,  etc.

I love the idea of being able to do a unit on a book, then to Skype chat with the author of the book and ask him/her any questjions you have. For instance, "What were you thinking when you wrote the book?" "Why did you choose that character?" It would be amazing!

I would love to use Skype in the future to talk with a student who was absent due to an illness at home. Let the absentee know that we miss them and care for them. It builds morale and community for our group of learners. It shares and teaches concepts that the standard curriculum manifesto can't teach.

Thing 14 | Podcasting and Bookmarking

iTunes U

I have used iTunes U before. I really enjoy hearing lectures on topics that interests me from world-reknown speakers from Stanford, Duke, Harvard or Princeton. I think it was intially created for the iPad use in the classroom. However, it still very end-user friendly. As an educator, you can share your ideas in a powerful new way, and your students get a rich, extensive, immersive learning experience. Once again it right at your fingertips. You have can one course in just one click of a button.

Texas's iTunes U channel

The U channel discuss turning iTunes U into a teaching tool.
(iTunes Texas education channel launched http://www.eclassroomnews.com/?p=100) This channel discusses education as it is relevant to the state of Texas. We get to get a fresh look on what is occurring in our profession in our own neighborhood. The podcasts allow you to choose what interests you rather than tuning into a large content that you would have to fast forward or wish to in order to be enlightened.

Bookmarking

Just as fun as podcasting...bookmaring is even more fun!

I got turned on to Delicious in my first techonology course with Dr. Wilson. And Pinterest well its a Children's Minister's dream. Here are a look at both of my bookmarking sites.

Thing 12 and 13 | Discovering and Using YouTube

It is amazing to learn that YouTube hasn't always been around. Even though at times it feels as if, "What could have life possibly been before YouTube?"
I love the versatility of embedding, downloading, and stripping that YouTube has allowed just within the last 2 to 3 years. Even Vimeo (a counterpart) is coming around.

I love movies that inspire you! Or even challenge you at that moment to DO, THINK, BE PROACTIVE! All the time you are watching the movie, you are thinking, "How can I do better?" or "How can I be better like that?"

Two of my feel good movies:

Dead Poets Society (1989)

Mr. Holland Opus (1995)

It is very end-user friendly to embed YouTube videos into a blog. There are many things useful on YouTube. I use YouTube videos when teaching Speech & Debate or my preschoolers as a Lesson concept Intro. For the most part, I love that I can find motion still and live lyrics (that I can strip into individual mp4) to use for conducting worship at church. In the past, you were able to use YouTube conversions like Zamzar. But now, Zamzar does not allow you to convert YouTube videos anymore. But there is always KeepVid  or SaveVid.

Take a Look....

 The Cheeseburger Song @VeggieTales

Motion Grunge Still

Live Lyric: Our God By Chris Tomlin

Here is even a video I created with my co-worker to bring invite our Teachers, Greeters, and Small Group Leaders in our Children's Ministry here at First Colony Church of Christ. Please enjoy the animation (wink!)

Thing 11 | Web 2.0 Tools

Current estimates place the number of web 2.0 tools at somewhere between 300 & 500 with only a handful emerging as market dominators. That is crazy! I believe that and possibly more!
Most are duplicates and random versions of each other like the Zoho Writer & Google Docs.

Discovery Exercise: For this discovery exercise, we are asked to select any site from this list of Web 2.0 Awards nominees and explore it.

I looked at the above link for the awards. It is unbelievable that amount of categories for web 2.0 Tools there are.  Web 2.0 technologies and social media tools are really every day affecting how public and private institutions function and deliver services.

Exploration

Explore one of these, create and animation and then embed it into the blog.

I believe Free apps, wikis, gadgets, etc are more appealing to the end-user. It strikes you away a lot of times when product providers want you to try for a limited time of 7 days and then after that pay 14.99 monthly. For a teacher, it is not within the budget or the means to do so sometimes. More ways that formats can be available to teachers to find effective, handy, worthwhile web 2.0 tools to use for reasearch and the classroom would be great.

DoInk

I looked at DoInk. I currently have used GoAnimate and decided to choose the Web 2.0 Tool that would have me learn something new. It is a great website that allows you to create flash type animations using your own drawings. I have used DoInk before, however, when I went to the website it mentioned being on a sanitarium rest. I was unable to create a @DoInk Animation (like below).

Voki

What is Voki? Voki is a FREE service that lets you:
  • Create customized avatars.

  • Add voice to your Voki avatars.
  • Post your Voki to any blog, website, or profile.
  • Take advantage of Voki's learning resources.
  • You can also make a voki classroom....
What is Voki Classroom? A classroom management system for Voki
  • Students do not need to sign up!
  • Add and manage your Classes & Students!
  • Lesson pages automatically created!
  • Customized appearance & instructions!
Here is my VOKI! Aren't I cute!!! You can add voice to your voki to. I didn't because I had to pay a fee to get that feature. That is only thing I didn't like about Voki. It was almost like you get touch but you couldn't. I would have loved to add this to my classroom website. It would be a picture of me talking to my class and walking them through their online assignments. Nice!

I also tried Schoology

Schoology allows teachers to  manage lessons, engage students, share content, and connect with other educators. Schoology definitely has classroom uses. I can see myself using this feature not just for the classroom but for managing recruitment and volunteers at church.

How to Use it in the Classroom

My Schoology:

Adding a Gadget

I added a Gadget to my Blog Today:

  1. +1 Button that allows people to had this current blog into their Google Plus
  2. Twitter Updates - which will allow other peers to view my quick technology updates and research
  3. Search this Blog - for easier access and end-user friendly capabilities
  4. Follow By Email - gives viewers the opportunity to access by their personal or professional email
  5. RSS Feed - lets viewers view top Feeds on technology on one location, this blog.

Personal Website or Personal Wiki

Personal Website or Personal WIKI

For this class assignment, I have chosen to create & upload a personal website.
I will a clear purpose and audience. It will contain at least 4 pages, end-user friendly, and be a contribution to the teaching profession and my lifelong learner experience.

10 points educational purpose clearly defined and followed on all pages of the site.
10 points contains 4 related pages with working links around a central theme.
10 points images are appropriate and correctly cited
10 points website design is easy to read and follow
10 points there is at least one interactive component
.

Creating Innovators:  The making of Young People who will change the world by Thomas Wagner (2012)

Thing 10 | Online Productivity Tools

There are just so many applications and online tools still to learn about. It appears that 5 new appear up in our upcoming and moving fast-paced technology world every day. Zoho Writer is a web-based word processing tool that creates simple documents.

I created an account with Zoho Writer and made a document. It was pretty simple and easy. The only trouble I had was trying to figure out why the shortcut keys for my computer wouldn't align with the hot keys Zoho Writer uses. But you can change the template and keys in their options postings. I love the step by step quick tips guides along the way. It helps to have a little help and cheat sheets as you are preparing a document.

I am still looking for differences between Zoho Writer and Google Docs. I don't believe there really are. The only small difference I can see is that Google Docs let's you translate your online document to any language you need. Other than that, no big difference.

Here is a look at what I created:

Thing 9 | Play with Wiki's

My Technology Popper Idea

Anna:

I love my preschoolers! Even preschoolers can use wikis! One thing I know about my preschoolers is that they love to draw. Every five seconds they are drawing Miss Anna a picture or me to take home an put on my refrigerator or take a picture to add to our Picture Tree. A great simple wiki for Early Childhood is the KinderDrawProject. I found this wiki during my exploration in Thing 8.

Our preschoolers today know how to use the computer in a way that a simple wiki such as this can appeal to them. Through this wiki, students can build new concepts and be able to draw them. This wiki can also be used in conjuction with the new 5E lesson plan format.

The drawing can be a collection of pictures created by the students or even a collection of images that students bring in from home or find with their parents on the internet.

View a couple examples of wikis

Kinder Drawing 1
Kinder Drawing 2

Personally or Professionally??

I could use a wiki both professionally and personally. I would get more bang for my buck using wikis professionally. I really am a champion for monitoring and tracking documents, ideas, and projects. I have explored a lot of wikis that allow me to do that. Having a portfolio that I can keep online with my interests, trends, projects, research and completions all in one place is great. And with one click of a button, I can present, share, and publish.

Thing 8 | Wikis

A wiki is a collaborative website and authoring tool that allows users to easily add, remove and edit content.  I use wikis all the time when writing in my personal blog. I find them very end-user friendly. I found a great blogspot webstie that shares some Top 10 Sites for creating a WIKI.

Below are so more great wikis to explore:
Library wikis
SJCPL Subject Guides – a pathfinder wiki developed by the St. Joseph County Public Library system
Book Lovers Wiki - developed by the Princeton Public Library
Library Success: A best practices wiki
ALA 2006 New Orleans wiki – an example of a wiki created to support a specific event
The Bull Run Library wiki - a public library wiki and also a Learning 2.0 participant

Teaching wikis
For Teachers New to Wikis gives application idea for using wikis with students
Educator Wikis after you scroll below the ads you will see lots of teacher blogs.
Teacher Wikis

Exploration of wikis for future help for the teaching profession:

  • I think Wikis are a great emergent web 2.0 tool for our learners today.
  • Wikis can create collaborative and cooperative paradigms for teachers and students peers.
  • Cooperative learning makes great impact and powerful meaning when it involves a community. Wiki tools push for community.
  • As a teacher, you can use wikis to develop research projects or keep a track or paper trail of their work.
  • Brainstorming & editing
  • Presentation Content.

I enjoyed the Book lovers & Educator Wikis. It helps to learn from others, see what is progressing for them and how you can share or improve on what you see and know. Everyone brings forth a new eye and fresh look to ideas and projects. Sharing them or viewing through a wiki is a pretty cool e-learning invention.

Thing 7 | Image Generators

Wordle or WordSift, Glogster/edu or VoiceThread, Animoto, or Voki

In this discovery exercise, we were to choose one of the above image generator tools. These tools create products that students can use for assignments. I chose two of them to explore:
- WordSift (visualization of text)
- VoiceThread (cloud conversations)
The other tools I have already experienced.

WordSift of Martin Luther King's Infamous 'I Have a Dream' speech:
VoiceThread

The Cheeseburger Song by VeggieTales - Used as an K-3 Icebreaker.

RoadRunner Anticipation - Used as K-3 Predicting in Storytelling Strategy.

How can this tool be used with your students?
I think if I were an English teacher, I could use WordSift to help my students "cut the fluff". The students could cut & paste a reflection paper that they have written into the sift generator. From there, the students could see which words pop up more frequently. If any of the words are like "trashcan articles" then we can go back and begin the editing/proofreading process in our papers. "Trashcan articles" are articles like 'the', 'an', 'this', 'that', etc. We use them in our everyday speech in random places but they don't belong in our writing, so we must throw them away to say what we really need to say.

What is one assignment that you could use that includes these tools?...either as a one computer assignment or as a class assignment.
I would use the Voice Thread for Story Prediction for sure.  With my K-3rd grade students they would love this.

I even believe 4-6 could create group projects where they make a movie or edit on a movie clip with their reflection. Kind of like director's commentary. Instead of writing a book reflection, I could have them make a image voice reflection or movie (on the book) reflection using Voice Thread.

In Speech & Debate, I could have loads of fun with voice dictation, voice perception & inflection. Wish I had known about this 2.0 Tool sooner!

Thing 6 | RSS and Newsreaders

http://aux4.iconpedia.net/uploads/954278258.png
RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and is a file format for delivering regularly updated information over the web. This week's Thing #6 involved me learning about RSS news feeds and setting up a Netvibes account.  NeTVIBES It is a free online newsreaders and they can bring your feeds together.

What do you like about RSS and newsreaders?

I have never spent too much time thinking about RSS feeds. I have kept a blog since high school and never thought that RSS feeds could be helpful. I love the use of the Netvibes account. It reminds me a lot of TweetDeck. Tweet Deck allows you to have all of your Social Media sites (accounts) in one place.

How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your work or personal life?
I could use NETVIBSES to...
  • Instantly create dashboards to track real-time Web
  • Add widgets to keep up to date with the latest trends my hottest interests
  • Share content with my family, friends and co-workers...
How can libraries use RSS feeds to take advantage of this new technology?
Libraries can use RSS by keeping up with news from other librarians, new and latest books, popular topic trends. The libraries themselves can use it as a great way to distribute information to their users. Here is another link for ways that libraries can use RSS feeds or websites like netvibes to be advantageous.

Thing 3, 4, & 5 | Photos & Images

I had so much fun with creating these pictures using my on-screen camera capture on my laptop computer. Then, I uploaded these photos through the Blogger Photo Uploader (below).

I took this photo with my Sony Camera and then uploaded it to my Blogger (above).
Then, I found a photo that resembled a mashup
and a photo turned into a puzzle piece (right).

I found using Flickr pretty easy and to the point. I never had a Flickr account before and it was very end user friendly. Photos do add to the blog. Using flickr to connect with your blogger is a great idea. You can also send iPhoto straight to your blogger account. I also through blogger found how to make a Scrapbook of colors and Valentine's Day photos from 2012. It is neat to have an online keepsake of memories you hold so dear.

Sometimes it is hard to keep up with your memories hardcopy. They can waste away or get damaged in a move, even lost. Having digital place to store them all makes things a little easier.

Thing 2 | Blogging

Blogs in Plain English

It is interesting that blogs created a new outlook on how we view the news. Moving to incorporate more of the "personal" in our every day tale all of news is seen everywhere than just our CNN or MBC. We see in our literature, reality shows, and even our local city hall.

Creating this blog was fun. I enjoy doing tasks like this. Currently, this is my fifth blog I maintain right now. I feel that it is important to document my challenges, frustrations and successes as I grow up and continually learning.

The powerpoint was very interesting (including the cool graphics and background design). I think at times you can put too much emphasis into what all goes in a blog. When according to the C's of Blogging, the best thing to do is find something that is catchy, consistent, clear, and builds community. It also needs to represent you, the honest you.

http://darmano.typepad.com/logic_emotion/2007/10/the-4-cs-of-blo.html
I would love to inquire professional blogging one day. I enjoy writing and I feel that I have something to say and want to share with others.

Preparing this blog was great. I created it through Blogger.com and added it to my existing account. I changed the template background, fonts and colors through the advanced template settings and began blogging away!

Thing 1 | Lifelong Learners

The hardest habit for me as a lifelong learner would be Habit 4: "Having confidence in myself as a competent, effective learner." I believe the hardest thing for me as a learner, as a professional is knowing that know matter how hard I try, I still can do better. At times as a learner, you want to accomplish a goal, but it appears there is always more that could be gained or a better path could have been taken to accomplish it.

The easiest habit for me as a lifelong learner would be Habit 7: "Teaching others." Even if I have a hard time pushing myself too much to obtain goals, I enjoy helping others find their path and listening to them.

Philosophy of Education

Philosophy of Education

 http://zelalemkibret.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/on-philosophy
Every educator should have a core set of personal beliefs on education. It is important to be aware of your own educational philosophy since it helps you focus on why you make decisions that plan and implement learning. Each day, I see clearly my views and values on education and development.

I believe that each student has the capacity to accomplish any goal that is set for them as long as they feel connected to what they are learning; without a link between the students and material, the interest is lost and the learning is harder and may take more time.

I believe a developing child builds cognitive structures, or schemes, that connect previous knowledge and/or experiences to new knowledge. This connection cultivates the student's understanding and responding to his or her environment.

I believe as an educator to have positive expectations for yourself and your students. To achieve learning in the classroom, I must carry faith in the ability in each student and reach for their success. Teachers who set high expectations for their students will receive higher achievement from their students.

I believe as an educator it is important to help students reach their fullest potential.

I believe a classroom should be an environment where students feel safe, comfortable, willing to take educational risks, be presented with new opportunities, and not be afraid to share their thoughts and ideas.

I believe as an educator I should to try and encourage students to discover life principles by themselves and help them make life applications. I must try to give them the opportunity to have dialogue among their peers and with myself about their personal experience, previous knowledge, and cultural beliefs. When you are able to build relationships and learn from one another, you can find similarities, build rapport, and enrich the learning process.

I believe an educator must walk alongside their students to create effective and meaningful dialogue about learning. Teacher-driven instruction and student-centered instruction are both needed, collaboratively in the classroom.

I believe to be the guide on the side, not the sage on the stage.
I believe it is important to create “learning intimacy” for my students. Students who exemplify passion and spirit for learning are more willing to pursue higher education.

I believe in the PURPLE STRATEGY. There are two entities involved in the purple strategy - the school combined (blue) with the role of the home (green). When those two influences are combined the learning & motivation towards education occurs. You need both to meet all the needs of the child.

I believe technology is an effective and innovative tool for the classroom.
I believe we as teachers must stretch ourselves if we are going to stretch our students.
I believe in the order of higher critical thinking.

I believe teaching provides opportunities growth, learning, and change.

In my classroom, I want to instill faith in themselves, hope in the future, and love of learning. When I am able to share my passion with them, I hope my experiences can help educate, influence, teach life applications needed for success.  It is important to know where you are going and what you want to do. Education provides a key.
